The Ligurian Apennines are covered with woods and dotted with characteristic agricultural villages that played important historical and supply roles in the past. La Spezia is a meeting point between the regions of Liguria, Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, and from here it is possible to reach the places of the Ligurian mountains and those of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Unique are the sites of Lunigiana, an area of the ancient settlements and culinary specialties, as well as the valleys of valli del Vara and the Magra.

It is important to mention the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri and the wonderful itineraries of the ancient Via Francigena perfect for everyone

La Lunigiana

The land of Lunigiana is a land which territory is divided between that of the Liguria and Tuscany regions.
Historical hub of trade and battles, it is a home to the numerous medieval historic villages scattered throughout its territory.

Immersing yourself in this place that has its roots in significant history, which starts from prehistoric times (one should mention the famous stele statues), until you reach the medieval era (with its castles and villages), You will aslo have the opportunity to reach many places of interest both by car and by walking along the ancient paths.

Le Alpi Apuane

The nearby Apuan Alps are a mountain chain bordering the Province of La Spezia and are a part of the Tuscan Subappennine. They are bordered to the north-west by the Magra river (Lunigiana), to the east by the Serchio river (Garfagnana, Mediavalle e Piano di Lucca) and to the south-west by Versilia e dalla Riviera Apuana, interessando parte del territorio delle province di Lucca e Massa-Carrara. Lungo i sentieri che percorrono le Alpi Apuane, possiamo godere di panorami mozzafiato che spaziano fino al mare.
Ulteriore tappa degna di nota sono le famosissime (fin dai tempi antichi) Cave di Marmo di Carrara.

The Val di Magra

The Val di Magra, crossed by the river that bears the same name: the ‘Magra’, has been a strategic road for millennia since ancient times, connected to Roman arteries that led pilgrims, wayfarers and traders along its routes. For this reason, churches, hospices and villages are scattered throughout the plain.

The Val di Vara

The beautiful Val di Vara is the green oasis of eastern Liguria and is a magnificent pearl of pride for its nature, biodiversity and historic villages. It is no coincidence that it is also known as the ‘Valley of the organic’, because of all those agronomic specialties which production is in fact aimed at ecological sustainability.
Remarkable are the villages where ancient culinary and agricultural traditions still exist.
